Impactful events may also give rise to extreme nationalist groups and\/or tendencies. Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, for example, in addition to the terrible human losses and destructions it causes in the country under attack, also deeply affects the social fabric of the occupying country as well as European societies in various ways. Not only did it lead to issues such as inflation and a new energy crisis, it also brought to light again another, more sinister fa\u00e7ade of human nature often associated with societies in conflict. Extremist narratives surrounding the war emerged, leading to mounting polarisation in society and undermining stability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ever since the 9\/11 terrorist attacks, addressing radicalisation and violent extremism has been and continues to be at the forefront of EU domestic and foreign security strategies. This challenge has prompted researchers to try to provide a better understanding of collective and individual triggers, geopolitical contexts, economic interests, diffusion channels and narratives. The goal is ultimately to shed light on why individuals embrace, support and act on extremist ideologies and movements that justify violence. Creating and sharing such knowledge constitute the first and most crucial step towards shaping resilient societies and designing interventions to protect the safety and well-being of all EU citizens.<\/p>\n<h6 class=\"c-article__title ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">An approach for unity, cohesion and security across the EU<\/span><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 12 EU-funded projects featured in this Results Pack provide a comprehensive overview of the latest scientific knowledge, evidence-based findings and policy-relevant insights about the human and societal impacts and causes of violent radicalisation and extremism in Europe and globally. The Results Pack highlights research funded between 2014 and 2020 under the Horizon 2020 framework programme, including ERC-funded frontier research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A wide range of approaches (national security, international cooperation, social psychology, social policies, ethnography of social networks) turns the spotlight on the people and communities concerned. Moreover, it focuses on possible ways to address their challenges in order to build new forms of resilience and a common, inclusive sense of social cohesion against hateful and discriminatory extremist thinking and actions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At a policy level, initiatives such as the <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/home-affairs.ec.europa.eu\/system\/files\/2022-03\/2022-2023%20Strategic%20orientations%20on%20a%20coordinated%20EU%20approach%20to%20prevention%20of%20radicalisation_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EU Strategic Orientations on a coordinated approach to prevention of radicalisation<\/a> ensure that actions taken at EU level address and are aligned with the needs and priorities of stakeholders in Member States. Equally, the <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/home-affairs.ec.europa.eu\/networks\/radicalisation-awareness-network-ran_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Radicalisation Awareness Network &#8211; RAN<\/a> connects frontline practitioners from across Europe to exchange knowledge and approaches to preventing and countering violent extremism in all its forms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moreover, the <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/home-affairs.ec.europa.eu\/news\/security-union-counter-terrorism-agenda-and-stronger-europol-boost-eus-resilience-2020-12-09_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Counter-Terrorism Agenda<\/a> aims to boost the EU\u2019s resilience to terrorists\u2019 threats, while legislation such as <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2021\/784\/oj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Regulation (EU<\/a> 2021\/784) tackles the dissemination of terrorist content online. The European Democracy Action Plan also identifies the need to counter radicalisation and disinformation, as a way to strengthen the resilience of EU democracies.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/the-eu-steps-up-support-to-prevent-violent-extremism-and-radicalisation-in-central-asia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/activistas-periodismo_0-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/the-eu-steps-up-support-to-prevent-violent-extremism-and-radicalisation-in-central-asia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The EU steps up support to prevent violent extremism and radicalisation in Central Asia<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h6 class=\"c-article__title ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Preventing and countering violent extremism \u2013 12 ways<\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Youth were at the heart of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443333-community-based-strategies-to-prevent-violent-extremism-among-youth\">CONNEKT<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443338-an-empathetic-approach-to-youth-radicalisation-in-europe\">ISLAM-OPHOB-ISM<\/a> projects: the former explored what draws young people to acts of violent extremism, while the latter analysed and contrasted the processes behind the radicalisation of native European youths, who support movements labelled as far-right, and Muslim-origin youths with a migration background.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Religion can be a polarising social factor, and while freedom of thought, belief, and religion is a fundamental right in the EU and in democratic societies at large, religious diversity remains for some groups a controversial issue and can be abused as a pretext to justify violence. <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443335-analysing-cultural-factors-to-raise-resilience-and-reduce-radicalisation\">GREASE<\/a> engaged researchers from around the world to investigate the connection between state-religion relations, governance of religious diversity and violent radicalisation processes. <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443343-looking-to-the-past-docutube-helps-teens-think-reflect-and-discuss-religion\">RETOPEA<\/a>, on the other hand, investigated the relationship between religion and society from a historical point of view.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">For decades, and more pronouncedly in recent years, populist movements have been finding their way into politics, sometimes voicing legitimate discontent in a society but actually leading to violent radicalisation, discrimination, hatred and disharmony in the political sphere. <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443334-countering-the-populist-threat-policy-recommendations-and-educational-tools\">DEMOS<\/a> addressed the challenge of populism by studying it via the innovative prism of \u2018democratic efficacy.\u2019 Focusing on four different movements, <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443341-the-multifaceted-interrelationship-between-protest-and-democratic-order\">POWDER<\/a> combined a theoretical interpretive approach and empirically sound research to investigate the mechanics of political protest within contemporary democracies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443340-tackling-violent-extremism-by-examining-the-driving-factors-of-radicalisation-and-resilience\">PAVE<\/a> focused on the interconnection between community dynamics and violent extremism. Studying the factors that make communities resilient against radicalisation will lead to better tools for the EU to counteract the various aspects of the phenomenon. Therefore, <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443342-material-grievances-make-some-communities-more-receptive-to-violent-extremism\">PREVEX<\/a> sought to understand why some communities are more able to display increased resilience against violent extremism compared to others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443336-in-depth-analysis-exposes-risk-factors-for-violent-extremism\">GRIEVANCE<\/a> provided a new dimension to the fight against radicalisation by introducing innovative modelling approaches and data sets to better assess violent extremism risks. To that end, risk terrain modelling and discrete choice modelling were applied for the first time, paving the way for innovative research in the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443344-using-machine-learning-to-identify-political-violence-and-anticipate-conflict\">ViEWS<\/a> employed machine learning algorithms to analyse a range of data sources related to past instances of violence. The premise was that predicting or anticipating the likelihood of conflict will better equip societies to take appropriate and timely action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tolerance is a self-evident concept in the context of advanced societies. Surprisingly, though, it is not so easy to define. <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443337-tolerance-one-of-those-things-we-cannot-not-want\">InTo<\/a> explored the concept of intergroup toleration, aiming to provide a clearer definition of tolerance and through its findings stimulate broader debates around cultural diversity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The theme of <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443339-no-laughing-matter-the-use-of-online-fun-as-a-tool-for-extreme-speech\">ONLINERPOL<\/a> was a strange strategy used by right-wing actors to circumvent internet censorship: the element of \u2018fun.\u2019 By focusing on fun as a \u2018meta-practice\u2019 of online extreme speech, the project provided insight into how xenophobic and exclusionary nationalist politics have managed to find their place online.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>More information:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/443390-research-and-strategies-to-prevent-radicalisation-and-violent-extremism\/es\">CORDIS<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The EU was established with the aim to provide common ground, literally and metaphorically, for its members to thrive in a stable and secure environment, being \u2018united in diversity.\u2019 The emergence of violent extremism, populism and radicalisation undermines European cohesion, unsettling the Union\u2019s foundations and fostering insecurity among its citizens.
