Dedicated facilities such as the Galileo Control Centres (GCCs), sensor and uplink stations are some of the most important components that make up the so-called \u2018\u2019Galileo Ground Segment\u2019\u2019 the role of which is to support the service provision of Europe\u2019s own Global Navigation Satellite System. An important element of the Galileo Ground Segment is the Galileo Sensor Stations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/nuevo-sensor-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-135634 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/nuevo-sensor-2-1024x612.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/nuevo-sensor-2-1024x612.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/nuevo-sensor-2-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/nuevo-sensor-2-768x459.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/nuevo-sensor-2.png 1043w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>So, what are GSSs and why are they important to the constellation?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Galileo Sensor Stations (GSS) is a network of antennas deployed at remote sites located around the world. They have small omnidirectional receiving antennas around just 50 cm high, and their role is to check the accuracy and signal quality of individual satellites in real-time and to pinpoint current satellite orbits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These measurements are transmitted via secure satellite communications to the Galileo Control Centres in Fucino, Italy. Here they serve as the basis of a set of corrections \u2013 accounting for timing or orbital slips \u2013 to be uplinked to the satellites via a network of 3m-diameter uplink stations. This is then rebroadcasted within navigation messages to users, currently updated every 50 minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-space-is-the-key-to-disaster-risk-management-and-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/eu_space-768x463.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-space-is-the-key-to-disaster-risk-management-and-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU Space is the key to disaster risk management and response<br \/>\n<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A thorough process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Establishing the GSS is not an easy procedure, and it requires meticulous attention as well as security accreditation by the Security Accreditation Board (SAB) of EUSPA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The decision for the new location was made in June 2020 but due to the COVID pandemic, deployment began only in summer 2022.
