Champagne and Prosciutto di Parma are well-known examples of agricultural GIs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, there is currently\u00a0<strong>no EU-wide GI protection\u00a0<\/strong>for craft and industrial goods. This regulation aims to establish directly applicable GI protection for craft and industrial products (such as jewellery, textiles, glass, porcelain, etc.) at EU level, complementing the existing EU protection for GIs in the agricultural domain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">GI protection for such products will lead to more\u00a0<strong>innovation<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>investment<\/strong>\u00a0in crafts by helping artisans and producers, particularly SMEs, to promote and protect their traditional know-how at EU level in compliance with EU competition rules.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/la-ue-se-convierte-en-miembro-del-tratado-para-una-mejor-proteccion-de-las-indicaciones-geograficas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Vino.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-becomes-member-of-treaty-for-better-protection-of-geographical-indications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU becomes member of treaty for better protection of geographical indications<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h6><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Main points of the agreement<\/span><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The political agreement reached today with the Parliament:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">guarantees the coherence with GI protection rules for agricultural products by applying the concept of\u00a0<strong>\u2018protected geographical indications\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0(so-called \u2018PGIs\u2019), which ensures that geographical indications are attractive for producers maintaining a strong link between the product\u2019s characteristics and its geographical origin<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">provides for efficient\u00a0<strong>control and verification<\/strong>\u00a0procedures for the protection of GIs with a system based on self-declaration as the default procedure that member states reinforce with controls<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">ensures that the protection of craft and industrial GIs also applies to the\u00a0<strong>domain name space<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>online\u00a0<\/strong>environment<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">facilitates procedures for the\u00a0<strong>registration<\/strong>\u00a0of GIs, in particular for SMEs, while ensuring a high level of legal protection with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) playing an important role on the registration procedures for craft and industrial GIs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Next steps<\/span><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The provisional agreement reached today with the European Parliament now needs to be endorsed and formally adopted by both institutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More information:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2023\/05\/02\/council-and-parliament-strike-provisional-deal-to-protect-geographical-indications-for-craft-and-industrial-products\/\">European Council<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Council and the European Parliament reached today a provisional deal on the regulation for geographical indication protection for\u00a0craft and industrial products.
