The proposed revisions should help consumers make more informed choices for a healthier diet and contribute to prevent food waste.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/agricultor.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-123575 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/agricultor.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/agricultor.png 886w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/agricultor-300x284.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/agricultor-768x727.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Commission put forward the following proposals, among others:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Origin labelling:\u00a0<\/strong>Clearer, mandatory origin labelling rules for\u00a0<strong>honey, nuts and dried fruits, ripened bananas, as well as trimmed, processed and cut fruit and vegetables<\/strong>\u00a0(such as packaged salad leaves). The country, or countries of origin in case of blends or mixes, will have to appear on the label. Listing the countries of origin will increase the transparency for consumers. This should also promote EU production of these products.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Food waste:<\/strong>\u00a0The proposed revisions address food waste and packaging waste. For example, so-called\u00a0<strong>\u201cugly\u201d fruit and vegetables<\/strong>\u00a0(with external defects but still suitable for local\/direct consumption) sold locally and directly by producers to consumers would be exempted from complying with marketing standards. Valorising them in their \u201cfresh\u201d state could offer consumers more opportunities to buy fresh fruit and vegetables at more affordable prices and benefit producers active in short supply chains. Certain products affected by natural disasters or other exceptional circumstances may also be sold if safe to consume.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/premios-ecologicos-de-la-ue-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/OrganicAwards_800x418px.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-organic-award-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU Organic award 2023<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Packaging:\u00a0<\/strong>Products intended for donation may be exempted from main labelling requirements. This will reduce red tape and labels and, therefore, facilitate operators&#8217; engagements in donations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fruit juices:<\/strong>\u00a0it will be possible for fruit juices to bear the mention \u201cwith no added sugars\u201d to clarify that, contrary to fruit nectars, fruit juices cannot by definition contain added sugars \u2013 a feature that most of the consumers are not aware of. Moreover, to address the growing consumer demand for products with lower sugar content, a reformulated fruit juice would be allowed to indicate \u201creduced-sugar fruit juice\u201d on its label. To simplify further and adapt to consumer tastes, the term \u201ccoconut water\u201d could now be used alongside \u201ccoconut juice\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jams and marmalades:<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>fruit content of jams will be increased<\/strong>\u00a0from 350 grammes to 450 grammes minimum (to 550 grammes for quality extra) per kilo of finished product. With the increase in fruit content across the board, consumers would be offered a product with less free sugars and more fruits than they currently get. The term \u201cmarmalade\u201d, authorised until now only for citrus jams, would now be allowed for all jams to introduce the possibility to adjust the name of the product to the most used locally.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eggs:<\/strong>\u00a0Solar panels may now be used in outdoor areas used in free-range production systems for eggs. This will stimulate greater supply of energy from renewable sources.
