justify;\">Following the provisional political agreement reached today by the Council and the European Parliament, more alternative fuel refuelling and recharging stations will be installed across Europe in the coming years, enabling the transport sector to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/que-hace-la-ue-para-fomentar-el-desarrollo-de-la-energia-renovable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221128PHT58206-cl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/what-is-the-eu-doing-to-promote-the-development-of-renewable-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What is the EU doing to promote the development of renewable energy?<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The objective of the proposed alternative fuel infrastructure regulation (AFIR) is threefold:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>to ensure that there is a sufficient infrastructure network for\u00a0<strong>recharging<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>refuelling<\/strong>\u00a0road vehicles or ships with alternative fuels<\/li>\n<li>to provide\u00a0<strong>alternative solutions<\/strong>\u00a0so that vessels at berth and stationary aircraft do not need to keep their engines running<\/li>\n<li>to achieve full\u00a0<strong>interoperability<\/strong>\u00a0throughout the EU and to make sure that the infrastructure is easy to use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The proposed regulation will play an important role in speeding up the deployment of this infrastructure so that the adoption of zero- and low-emission vehicles and ships will not be impeded, initiating a\u00a0<strong>virtuous circle for the transport sector<\/strong>, and delivering on the targets of the European climate law.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Main elements retained from the Commission\u2019s proposal<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The provisional agreement retains the\u00a0<strong>fundamental aspects<\/strong>\u00a0of the Commission\u2019s proposal, i.e., the\u00a0<strong>key overall parameters<\/strong>\u00a0that will have a real impact on the climate, in particular:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>for recharging\u00a0<strong>light electric vehicles<\/strong>, requirements for the total power capacity to be provided based on the size of the registered fleet and the trans-European network-transport (TEN-T) coverage requirements in 2025 and 2030<\/li>\n<li>for recharging electric\u00a0<strong>heavy-duty vehicles<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>hydrogen<\/strong>\u00a0refuelling, requirements for TEN-T coverage by 2030, starting in 2025 for electric heavy-duty vehicles<\/li>\n<li>for the supply of\u00a0<strong>electricity to ships<\/strong>\u00a0at the quayside in ports, requirements applicable from 2030<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Main amendments to the Commission\u2019s proposal<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The text of the provisional agreement amends, however, some aspects of the Commission\u2019s proposal:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>given the specific dynamics of the\u00a0<strong>electric heavy-duty vehicles<\/strong>\u00a0and the fact that the market is less developed than for light vehicles, a\u00a0<strong>gradual process<\/strong>\u00a0of infrastructure deployment is set to start in 2025 aiming at covering all TEN-T roads by 2030<\/li>\n<li>to maximise the efficiency of investments in\u00a0<strong>hydrogen refuelling<\/strong>\u00a0and to adapt to technological developments, the requirements focus on the deployment of gaseous hydrogen refuelling infrastructure with a particular attention to\u00a0<strong>urban nodes<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>multimodal hubs<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>to ensure that electric recharging requirements are compatible with the wide range of circumstances on the ground and that investments are proportionate to needs, the\u00a0<strong>total power<\/strong>\u00a0of electric recharging pools has been adapted and the\u00a0<strong>maximum distance<\/strong>\u00a0between recharging pools for road sections with very low traffic can be increased<\/li>\n<li>to make electric recharging and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure easy to use, different\u00a0<strong>payment and price-display options<\/strong>\u00a0are available, while avoiding disproportionate investment, particularly in existing infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>regarding\u00a0<strong>on-shore power supply<\/strong>\u00a0in maritime ports, provisions are now fully consistent with the recently agreed FuelEU maritime proposal<\/li>\n<li>the text specifies the obligations of each stakeholder involved, provides for progress tracking, ensures\u00a0<strong>users are properly informed<\/strong>\u00a0and supplies the industry with\u00a0<strong>common standards<\/strong>\u00a0and technical specifications<\/li>\n<li>with a view to significant technological and market developments that will affect\u00a0<strong>heavy-duty vehicles<\/strong>, the text of the provisional agreement includes a clause on a\u00a0<strong>specific review<\/strong>\u00a0in the short term, whereas the whole regulation will be also reviewed in the medium term<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">More information<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2023\/03\/28\/alternative-fuel-infrastructure-provisional-agreement-for-more-recharging-and-refuelling-stations-across-europe\/\"
