{"id":131368,"date":"2023-03-07T03:00:16","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T02:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=131368"},"modified":"2023-03-07T09:07:33","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T08:07:33","slug":"eib-underwrites-e55m-green-loan-for-wind-farm-in-castile-and-leon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eib-underwrites-e55m-green-loan-for-wind-farm-in-castile-and-leon\/","title":{"rendered":"EIB underwrites \u20ac55m green loan for wind farm in Castile and Le\u00f3n"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The European Investment Bank (EIB) has officially approved a EUR 55 million green loan to a joint venture between Iberdrola (75%) and Caja Rural de Soria (25%) for the construction of one of Castilla y Le\u00f3n&#8217;s largest wind farms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/eba3378f-ef7a-4d4f-884c-e67e475f0f3a.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-131363 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/eba3378f-ef7a-4d4f-884c-e67e475f0f3a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/eba3378f-ef7a-4d4f-884c-e67e475f0f3a.jpg 912w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/eba3378f-ef7a-4d4f-884c-e67e475f0f3a-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/eba3378f-ef7a-4d4f-884c-e67e475f0f3a-768x505.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Buniel wind farm in the province of Burgos has a total capacity of approximately 100 megawatts (MW) and the capacity to supply around 69,700 households with clean energy. With the help of the renewable energy produced, 90,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions are avoided each year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The total investment of the new project is approximately 100 million euros. The facilities will become an economic resource for rural localities in the region, employing up to 200 during the construction phase and approximately 10 during operation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The project is located in Castilla y Le\u00f3n, one of the EU&#8217;s cohesion regions. It therefore boosts the EIB&#8217;s regional development objectives, which prioritise the promotion of projects in regions with a gross domestic product (GDP) per capita below the EU average.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cWe are pleased to be financing this wind farm, which is unique in many ways and will add an installed capacity of around 100 MW,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<strong>EIB Vice-President\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eib.org\/about\/governance-and-structure\/statutory-bodies\/management-committee\/members\/ricardo-mourinho-felix.htm\"><strong>Ricardo Mourinho F\u00e9lix<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0said.\u00a0<em>\u201cIt will drive economic growth and employment in an EU cohesion region such as Castilla y Le\u00f3n, and contribute to the climate goals of Spain and Europe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Chief Executive Officer of Iberdrola Spain Mario Ruiz-Tagle<\/strong>\u00a0added:\u00a0<em>\u201cSpain has great potential when it comes to renewable energy. With initiatives like this, we can help our country become a leader in the sector, facilitating investments that promote the transition towards an economy that is less dependent on fossil fuels, while also creating economic growth and employment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>President of Caja Rural de Soria Carlos Mart\u00ednez Izquierdo<\/strong>, who is also president of the joint venture promoting the wind farm,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>highlighted\u00a0<em>\u201cthe importance of having a presence in the local economy \u2014 an economy linked to renewable energy, in which we already have over 25\u00a0years of experience. And it all started in Soria. Investing in \u2018energy freedom\u2019 makes us more economically stable as a country. This issue has really come to the fore amid the current geopolitical situation, which has become so acute that it has pushed the need for clean, local energy to the very top of the agenda.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0He also added that\u00a0<em>\u201cthe turbines were almost completely designed and manufactured in Spain, and were actually assembled in Castilla y Le\u00f3n, in \u00c1greda, Soria.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This operation contributes to the energy policy priorities of the European Union and Spain. It supports the European Commission\u2019s REPowerEU plan unveiled in May\u00a02022, which aims to accelerate the green transition and end Europe\u2019s dependence on Russian fossil fuel imports. In Spain, the project will also help to achieve the country\u2019s 42% renewable energy target for 2030 under the 2021-2030 integrated national energy and climate plan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The financing is classified as an EIB green loan as it fully complies with the climate action and renewable energy eligibility criteria. The features of the loan mean that it also fully meets the requirements of EIB Climate Awareness Bonds on the green loan market. This transaction is therefore likely to be allocated to the EIB\u2019s portfolio of lending operations financed by the issuance of such bonds.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/acuerdo-firmado-por-el-bei-y-la-comision-europea-para-impulsar-las-inversiones-del-sector-privado-en-los-paises-de-africa-el-caribe-y-el-pacifico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2d73d536-7694-43b0-a66d-340525b24675.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/an-agreement-signed-by-the-eib-and-the-european-commission-to-boost-private-sector-investment-in-african-caribbean-and-pacific-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An agreement signed by the EIB and the European Commission to boost private sector investment in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The EIB and energy security<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the past decade, the European Investment Bank Group has channelled almost \u20ac106\u00a0billion into the European Union\u2019s energy sector. These vital investments are now helping Europe weather the crisis triggered by the abrupt cut in Russian gas supplies. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eib.org\/en\/press\/all\/2023-032-eib-group-commits-record-financing-in-support-of-eu-energy-security-and-green-economy\">2022 alone<\/a>, the EIB signed financial support totalling more than \u20ac17\u00a0billion for projects in energy efficiency, renewables, electricity and storage in the European Union, thus helping to strengthen the resilience of the European economy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In October 2022, the EIB Board of Directors decided to raise the Group\u2019s clean energy financing volumes to unprecedented levels in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eib.org\/en\/press\/all\/2022-450-eib-boosts-clean-energy-financing-in-support-of-repowereu-plan\">support of the REPowerEU objective<\/a>\u00a0of ending Europe\u2019s dependence on Russian fossil fuel imports. Over the next five years, an additional \u20ac30\u00a0billion will be invested on top of the EIB\u2019s already robust support for the EU energy sector. The strategy focuses on mitigating climate change and creating wealth and jobs in the regions where Iberdrola operates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This funding will enable the company to further strengthen its leading position in sustainable financing. At the end of September, Iberdrola\u2019s net debt amounted to \u20ac44 293\u00a0billion: the current green bond operation worth over \u20ac16\u00a0billion; around the same amount in environmental, social and governance credit lines; \u20ac5\u00a0billion in commercial paper; and around \u20ac3\u00a0billion in loans and structured financing.
