Archaeologists have discovered 330 lithic tools used to slaughter animals and grind plant material into food. Their study, published in the journal Science and led by the Smithsonian Institution&#8217;s National Museum of Natural History and the Queens School of the City University of New York (CUNY), says these tools were made about 2.9 million years ago. However, our species &#8220;Homo sapiens&#8221; appeared only about 300,000 years ago. Moreover, the two large-toothed fossils excavated at the archaeological site belong to the genus &#8220;Paranthropus&#8221;, a distant relative of humans with large teeth and small brains.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/la-ual-analiza-la-investigacion-mundial-sobre-los-neandertales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/FOTO-1-DICIEMBRE-12-2022-INVESTIGACION-NEARDENTALES-768x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/the-university-of-almeria-analyses-world-research-on-the-neanderthals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The University of Almeria analyses world research on the Neanderthals<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tech-savvy manufacturers predate our ancestors<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The artefacts represent the oldest-known examples of a revolutionary Stone Age technology called the Oldowan toolkit. Scientists believed these tools were only used by ancestors of H. sapiens. However, no fossils were discovered for H. sapiens. The tools consisted of hammerstones and stone cores to pound plants, bone and meat, and flakes to cut meat. The food prepared with these tools was eaten raw because fire had not been harnessed yet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe assumption among researchers has long been that only the genus Homo, to which humans belong, was capable of making stone tools,\u201d senior author Rick Potts, the National Museum of Natural History\u2019s Peter Buck Chair of Human Origins, commented in a <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/newsdesk\/releases\/29-million-year-old-butchery-site-reopens-case-who-made-first-stone-tools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smithsonian<\/a> news release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWith these tools you can crush better than an elephant\u2019s molar can and cut better than a lion\u2019s canine can,\u201d Prof. Potts explained. \u201cOldowan technology was like suddenly evolving a brand-new set of teeth outside your body, and it opened up a new variety of foods on the African savannah to our ancestors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is one of the oldest if not the oldest example of Oldowan technology,\u201d added lead author Thomas Plummer, professor of anthropology at Queens College CUNY and research associate in the scientific team of the Smithsonian\u2019s Human Origins Program. \u201cThis shows the toolkit was more widely distributed at an earlier date than people realized, and that it was used to process a wide variety of plant and animal tissues. We don\u2019t know for sure what the adaptive significance was but the variety of uses suggests it was important to these hominins.\u201d Hominins are various species considered human or closely related.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<h3 class=\"c-article__title\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sophisticated stone technology plot thickens<\/h3>\n<p class=\"c-article__text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, will the real toolmakers ever be known? \u201cThose teeth open up an amazing whodunit \u2014 a real question of, well, who were these earliest toolmakers?\u201d Prof. Potts told the <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/science-new-york-city-queens-kenya-c3e202e326daa841ee1893fc7902299d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018Associated Press\u2019<\/a>. \u201cWhile some species of nonhuman primates produce technologies that assist in foraging, humans are uniquely dependent on technology for survival,\u201d Prof. Plummer told <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/09\/world\/first-stone-tools-hippo-scn\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018CNN\u2019<\/a>. \u201cBut the evolutionary origins of this reliance on technology for survival is shrouded in mystery.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">More information<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/442933-trending-science-we-ve-found-the-oldest-stone-tools-but-they-were-not-made-by-humans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CORDIS<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New research describes the discovery of prehistoric stone tools found in Kenya that predate the time of the first humans.
