Of the 552 language combinations available, the students from 681 schools used 141 combinations, including Spanish into Slovenian and Polish into Danish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The students participating in the contest enjoyed the opportunity to discover translation. As students from a school in Spain school put it<em>: \u2018Our English teacher is a former translator and we&#8217;ve all enjoyed every bit of the preparation process, practising with texts from past years and learning about the challenges of translation in the EU institutions. We&#8217;ve even planned a visit to a university that runs a degree in translation to learn more about this world.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The European Commission&#8217;s translators selected 27 winners, one for each EU country, as well as 287 students who received special mentions for their outstanding translations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/how-machine-translation-impacts-language-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/rami-al-zayat-w33-zg-dNL4-unsplash-768x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/how-machine-translation-impacts-language-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How machine translation impacts language learning<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The award ceremony for the 27 winners will take place in Brussels, on 31\u00a0March 2023.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The European Commission&#8217;s Directorate-General for Translation has organised the\u00a0<em>Juvenes Translatores<\/em>\u00a0(Latin for \u2018<em>young translators<\/em>&#8216;) contest every year since 2007. Over the years, the contest has been a life-changing experience for many of its entrants and winners. Some have decided to study translation at university, and some have joined the European Commission&#8217;s translation department as a trainee or a full-time translator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The goal of the\u00a0<em>Juvenes Translatores<\/em>\u00a0contest is to promote language learning in schools and give young people a taste of what it is like to be a translator. The competition is open to 17-year-old secondary school students and takes place at the same time in all selected schools across the EU.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Multilingualism, and therefore translation, have been an integral feature of the EU since the European Communities were first created. It was enshrined in the very first Regulation adopted in 1958 (<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/1958\/1(1)\/oj\">EEC Council: Regulation No\u00a01<\/a>).
