ChatGPT recently passed law and business exams from two universities in the United States. The results were mixed. It achieved a low but passing grade in law, but earned a B to B- grade in business. There are growing concerns over how students will use the AI.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several educational institutions and major academic journal publishers around the world have already banned the chatbot. But is this the way to go? \u201cBans are needed,\u201d Christian Terwiesch, a professor at University of Pennsylvania\u2019s The Wharton School where one of the exams took place, told <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/26\/tech\/chatgpt-passes-exams\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018CNN\u2019<\/a>. \u201cAfter all, when you give a medical doctor a degree, you want them to know medicine, not how to use a bot. The same holds for other skill certification [sic], including law and business.\u201d However, he believes ChatGPT will become a part of the classroom. \u201cIf all we end up with is the same educational system as before, we have wasted an amazing opportunity that comes with ChatGPT.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIn a few years\u2019 time, students will be confronted with people who have had the right to use it, who have learned to do so and who have learned to what extent they can trust the tool or not,\u201d Am\u00e9lie Cordier, AI lecturer at France\u2019s Lyon I University, commented in <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2023\/01\/28\/students-are-using-chatgpt-to-do-their-homework-should-schools-ban-ai-tools-or-embrace-the\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018Euronews Next\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"c-article__text\">A recent <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1544612323000363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a> showed that ChatGPT can produce academic papers good enough for journals. In a <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/chatgpt-our-study-shows-ai-can-produce-academic-papers-good-enough-for-journals-just-as-some-ban-it-197762\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018The Conversation\u2019<\/a> article, study researchers Brian Lucey and Michael Dowling say the scientific community shouldn\u2019t be threatened by it. \u201c[W]e think that researchers should see ChatGPT as an aide, not a threat. It may particularly be an aide for groups of researchers who tend to lack the financial resources for traditional (human) research assistance: emerging economy researchers, graduate students and early career researchers. It\u2019s just possible that ChatGPT (and similar programs) could help democratise the research process.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"c-article__title\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Weighing the good with the bad<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"c-article__text\">Will ChatGPT steal our jobs, like some are predicting? Not more so than any other AI. <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/the-future-of-jobs-report-2020\/digest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tasks that can be easily automated<\/a> will gradually disappear anyway. ChatGPT poses a <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/11\/chatgpt-cybersecurity-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">huge cybersecurity risk<\/a> because it can write convincing phishing messages and create malicious code. It can also <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-science-business-artificial-intelligence-afb4618ff593db9e3e51ecbd91dc3eef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">create propaganda and disinformation<\/a>, as it did when asked to produce a blog post, news story or essay on how COVID-19 vaccines are unsafe. \u201cThis is a new technology, and I think what\u2019s clear is that in the wrong hands there\u2019s going to be a lot of trouble,\u201d NewsGuard co-CEO Gordon Crovitz told the <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-science-business-artificial-intelligence-afb4618ff593db9e3e51ecbd91dc3eef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018Associated Press\u2019<\/a>. In January at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, top international execs <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/chatgpt-davos-openai-ai-world-economic-forum-2023-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">salivated at ChatGPT\u2019s potential<\/a>. With so many capabilities, is there anything ChatGPT can\u2019t do? It\u2019s not good at differentiating between what\u2019s true and false. It can also lie in a persuasive way. Don\u2019t forget to fact check!
