{"id":129756,"date":"2023-02-01T09:39:12","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T08:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=129756"},"modified":"2023-02-01T12:19:01","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T11:19:01","slug":"the-european-structural-and-investment-funds-supported-more-than-4-million-smes-between-2014-and-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/the-european-structural-and-investment-funds-supported-more-than-4-million-smes-between-2014-and-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"The European Structural and Investment Funds supported more than 4 million SMEs between 2014 and 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2014-2020, the <strong>European Structural and Investment Funds<\/strong> (ESI Funds) unleashed a total investment of <strong>\u20ac731 billion<\/strong>, of which\u00a0<strong>\u20ac535 billion\u00a0<\/strong>was funded<strong>\u00a0by the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>EU<\/strong>, fostering lasting <em>socio<\/em>&#8211;<em>economic convergence<\/em>, <em>territorial cohesion<\/em>, <em>social Europe<\/em> and a s<em>mooth green<\/em> and<em> digital transition<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/pexels-fauxels-3184424.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-129754 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/pexels-fauxels-3184424.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/pexels-fauxels-3184424.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/pexels-fauxels-3184424-300x130.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is explained in the\u00a0<strong>2022 Summary Report on the Implementation of the ESI Funds\u00a0<\/strong>adopted by the Commission.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The report presents the achievements of the\u00a0<strong>ESI Funds by the end of 2021<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>More than 4 million small and medium businesses (SMEs)\u00a0<\/strong>were supported;<\/li>\n<li><strong>55.2 million<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>people were supported<\/strong>\u00a0through employment, social inclusion or skills and education actions;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy production capacity\u00a0<\/strong>was<strong>\u00a0increased\u00a0<\/strong>by more than 3,600 megawatt hours\/year resulting from renewable energy resources whilst the annual primary energy consumption of public buildings was reduced by 2.6 terawatt hours\/year (equivalent to the amount of electricity consumed by around 720,000 households for a whole year);<\/li>\n<li><strong>2.3 million projects supported the agricultural sector and rural SMES\u00a0<\/strong>becoming more competitive, and helped create jobs in rural areas;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In the fishing and aquaculture sector 44,000 jobs were maintained and more than 6,000 new jobs were created<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>ESI Funds were also at the frontline of the support to Member States and Regions\u00a0<\/strong>to face the<strong>\u00a0COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impact.<\/strong><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/commission-aid-to-spain-for-energy-consumption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/margrethe_vestager_20_nov_2014.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/commission-aid-to-spain-for-energy-consumption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/margrethe_vestager_20_nov_2014.jpeg<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Thanks to temporary flexibilities introduced into Cohesion Policy in the wake of the health emergency,\u00a0<\/strong>Member States were given the possibility to re-allocate unspent Cohesion Policy funds to priority areas such as healthcare, short-time work schemes and support to SMEs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ESI Funds have been distributed since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020 and 2021<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to cover the emerging needs of medical institutions, researchers, business owners, employees, and vulnerable people. Moreover, ESI funds helped to train millions of people with low skills, many of them gaining formal qualifications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, ESI Funds were central in boosting energy efficiency measures and renewables, building renovation and market integration, as key drivers of the EU&#8217;s energy security.
