Efforts to decrease needless waste often cite the \u2018five Rs\u2019 \u2013 refuse, reduce, reuse (or repair), repurpose and recycle \u2013 as a means to achieve this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-teaser\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Currently, fixing damage or deterioration to physical infrastructure, such as roads or buildings, means replacing the original construction materials. This not only is often financially and environmentally costly, but can also compromise structural integrity and aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-teaser\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Is there a greener alternative? According to Harbottle: \u201cEvolution has given plants and animals a myriad of ways to heal themselves when injured. We can learn a lot from nature when designing our built environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-teaser\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, when we break bones, soon afterwards blood vessels around the fracture constrict and form a clot to stop further bleeding. Soft fibrous tissue and cartilage then start forming bone-like material called callus. New bone cells then develop on either side of the fracture growing together and absorbing the callus to create new bone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-teaser\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Working at <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/engineering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cardiff University<\/a> in the United Kingdom, Harbottle has been involved in a series of initiatives to develop construction materials that harness biological processes to preserve existing infrastructure, reducing maintenance and new construction. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/421447-bioengineered-self-healing-for-sustainable-building-and-smart-heritage-preservation\">GEOHEAL<\/a> project, funded by the <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Actions programme<\/a>, Harbottle tapped the ability of bacteria to mineralise calcite which can then \u2018repair\u2019 natural materials like the limestone and sandstone often used in construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-teaser\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The hardy bacterium used, <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sporosarcina_ureae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sporosarcina ureae<\/a>, is seeded as spores alongside their required nutrients. As they grow, the <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microbiologically_induced_calcite_precipitation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bacteria produce calcium carbonate<\/a> which hardens into calcite crystals that can bind with limestone and glue sandstone grains together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-teaser\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBeing porous, masonry can host a range of active microorganisms, so this treatment could be applied by sprays, paints or capsules inserted into pores, repairing the material while retaining its ability to \u2018breathe\u2019,\u201d explains Harbottle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-teaser\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Harbottle also discovered that the bacteria could offer a cyclic solution. When dormant bacteria are mixed into mortar paste, they can be continually reanimated when cracks appear in the mortar.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/reducing-europes-reliance-on-rare-earths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/etienne-desclides-N2vnFIujxJg-unsplash-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/reducing-europes-reliance-on-rare-earths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reducing Europe\u2019s reliance on rare earths<br \/>\n<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"c-article__title\"><strong>As good as new?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text\">\u201cThe bacteria create a kind of scar tissue. Exactly how close this comes to regeneration, depends on the material,\u201d says Harbottle. \u201cAs limestone has plenty of calcium and carbonate available, it\u2019s likely that some of the newly formed calcite contains minerals from the original material \u2018rearranged\u2019 by the bacteria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text\">According to Harbottle, the resulting fix is probably very similar to the original material, regaining its properties, such as strength and weather resilience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text\">As Harbottle points out, self-healing as a concept has been widely applied to other materials, including <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/lg-self-heal-phone-1184034-Nov2013\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polymers<\/a> and <a class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/erik_schlangen_a_self_healing_asphalt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">asphalt<\/a>, as well as concrete. \u201cI believe it\u2019s also been investigated in metals but this wouldn\u2019t involve bacteria, which is most appropriate in construction materials as these involve mineral-producing processes,\u201d Harbottle adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text\">While Harbottle didn\u2019t want to stray too far from his own area of expertise, he did allow a peek into the potential future of smart building materials. \u201cBefore an organism can self-heal, it first has to know that it is injured. So recent work in the United Kingdom has explored sensing and actuation systems \u2013 giving materials the ability to detect deterioration, analyse options and then decide what to do, without human intervention,\u201d he expands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text\">\u201cIn the future, it could be possible to develop entirely autonomous self-repairing systems, but they would have to harvest the chemicals and energy necessary to produce a repairing agent from their surrounding environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"c-article__title\"><strong>So when will our high street be self-repairing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text\">Currently Harbottle\u2019s bacterial-driven solution faces a number of challenges. One is supply \u2013 Harbottle\u2019s bacteria were sourced from his lab, but for mainstream use, indigenous bacteria would have to be sourced in large quantities, and would have to be trialled before use.\u00a0 Another limitation is demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text\">The construction industry is rightly conservative when it comes to new materials, given the potentially devastating implications of failure. As Harbottle points out, there are not only safety risks but also aesthetic risks for heritage restorations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article__text\">\u201cWe need to build up \u2013 pun intended \u2013 evidence across a range of structures to win the confidence of potential users. Probably first prioritising non safety-critical environments or non-structural, cosmetic elements such as paving or facades,\u201d adds Harbottle.
