This framework contains global goals and targets aiming to protect and restore nature for current and future generations, ensure its sustainable use as well as spur investments for a green global economy. Together with the Paris Agreement on climate, it paves the way towards a climate-neutral, nature-positive and resilient world by 2050.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The agreement is a\u00a0<strong>solid framework with<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>clear, measurable goals and targets<\/strong>, with\u00a0<strong>complete monitoring, reporting, and review arrangements to track progress complemented by a robust resource mobilisation package<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">More than half of global GDP depends on ecosystem services. 70% of the world&#8217;s most vulnerable people depend directly on wild species. The Kunming-Montreal agreement will accelerate ambitious policies around the world and mobilise financing for biodiversity from all sources \u2013 USD 200 billion per year by 2030. It commits the global community to actions to protect and restore nature and remove pollution \u2013 such as those that are part of the European Green Deal. This will ensure that nature continues sustaining societies, economies and communities for decades to come.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Goals and targets for ambitious action by 2030 and 2050<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Kunming-Montreal biodiversity agreement includes key global targets to:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Restore 30% degraded ecosystems<\/strong>\u00a0globally (on land and sea) by 2030<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conserve and manage 30%<\/strong>\u00a0areas (terrestrial, inland water, and coastal and marine) by 2030<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stop the extinction<\/strong>\u00a0of known species, and by 2050 reduce tenfold the extinction risk and rate of all species (including unknown)<\/li>\n<li>Reduce\u00a0<strong>risk from pesticides<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>by at least 50%<\/strong>\u00a0by 2030<\/li>\n<li>Reduce\u00a0<strong>nutrients lost to the environment<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>by at least 50%\u00a0<\/strong>by 2030<\/li>\n<li>Reduce\u00a0<strong>pollution risks<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>negative impacts of pollution from all sources<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>by 2030<\/strong>\u00a0to levels that are not harmful to biodiversity and ecosystem functions<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reduce<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>global footprint of consumption by 2030,<\/strong>\u00a0including through significantly reducing overconsumption and waste generation and halving food waste<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sustainably manage<\/strong>\u00a0areas under agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries, and forestry and substantially increase\u00a0<strong>agroecology and other biodiversity-friendly practices<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Tackle climate change through\u00a0<strong>nature-based solutions<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Reduce the rate of introduction and establishment of\u00a0<strong>invasive alien species<\/strong>\u00a0by at least 50% by 2030<\/li>\n<li>Secure the safe, legal and sustainable\u00a0<strong>use and trade of wild species<\/strong>\u00a0by 2030<\/li>\n<li>Green up<strong>\u00a0urban spaces.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/ficha\/ecosystem-and-ecosystem-services-accounts-time-for-applications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ecosystem-application-212x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/ficha\/ecosystem-and-ecosystem-services-accounts-time-for-applications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ecosystem and ecosystem services accounts. Time for applications<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Mobilising finance and allow for business to take responsibility for biodiversity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The deal will significantly increase the mobilisation of finance for biodiversity from all sources, domestic, international \u2013 both public and private &#8211; mobilising at least\u00a0<strong>USD 200 billion per year\u00a0<\/strong>by 2030. It will create incentives for domestic and international sources, including from business investment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It also addresses\u00a0<strong>subsidies harmful to biodiversity<\/strong>, with the commitment to identify by 2025 and eliminate by 2030 a total of\u00a0<strong>at least USD 500 billion per year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As part of the agreement, the EU subscribed to an\u00a0<strong>international solidarity package<\/strong>, particularly for the most vulnerable countries and the most biodiverse. The new\u00a0<strong>Global Biodiversity Framework Fund<\/strong>\u00a0established under the Global Environment Facility will be open to financing from all sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a major step to improve business action on biodiversity, large and transnational\u00a0<strong>companies and financial institutions will be required to regularly monitor, assess and disclose risks, dependencies and impacts on biodiversity<\/strong>; and provide\u00a0<strong>information to consumers<\/strong>\u00a0to promote sustainable consumption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>EU engagement creating space for agreement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">European unity and leadership were essential throughout the four-year negotiations. In Montr\u00e9al, the EU negotiating team, headed by Commissioner\u00a0<strong>Sinkevi\u010dius<\/strong>, together with the EU Member States, coordinated by the Czech Council Presidency, succeeded in creating the space and driving ambition in parallel with progress on finance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The agreement is an important\u00a0<strong>boost for multilateralism<\/strong>, at a time when global solidarity and cooperation are more needed than ever.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the negotiations of the new agreement have concluded, it is time for all countries to\u00a0<strong>implement<\/strong>\u00a0the framework through domestic and international action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before the next COP in 2024, all countries have to prepare updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans as well as National Biodiversity Finance Strategies. The next COPs will consider if the cumulative impact of the national actions is sufficient to reach the global goals and targets for 2030 and 2050.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In parallel to policy action, countries and multilateral financial institutions will now work on a fast start to the mobilisation of financing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/strategy\/priorities-2019-2024\/european-green-deal_en\">European Green Deal<\/a>\u00a0puts Europe at the forefront of this global economic transformation. Our proposals, such as the recently adopted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_7444\">law on deforestation-free supply chains<\/a>\u00a0and further work on eliminating pollution will drive our delivery on the Kunming-Montreal deal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Keeping nature healthy, greening our cities, and maintaining the enormous\u00a0<strong>div<\/strong><strong>ersity of life on our planet are essential for our future. Nature cleans our water, gives us nutritious food, protects us from floods and helps mitigate climate change.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At COP 15 in Montreal, the EU formed alliances and initiatives to help deliver the Global Biodiversity Framework on the ground. Together with a number of Member States and several other countries the EU\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_7767\">joined forces<\/a>\u00a0to significantly increase finance for biodiversity from all sources. The EU also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_7772\">joined<\/a>\u00a0key initiatives to help partner countries strengthen capacities and knowledge to deliver the Global Biodiversity Framework. These include the high ambition Accelerator Partnership to support the future implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework, and the Global Knowledge Support Service for Biodiversity, to help countries monitor progress in fulfilling biodiversity objectives.
