Access will remain granted only to vessels that traditionally fish in the area. This will allow member states to decrease fishing pressures in some areas and preserve local economic and small-scale activities along their coasts. For outermost EU regions, derogations cover areas within 100 nautical miles of the coast for vessels registered in the ports of those regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">Parliament supported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20220929IPR41808\/meps-concluded-negotiations-on-rules-granting-equal-access-to-eu-waters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the agreement<\/a>\u00a0reached with Council in September by 608 votes against 13 and 9 abstentions, allowing the current regime \u2013 which reflects several bilateral adjustments and changes following the withdrawal of the UK \u2013 to continue until 1 January 2032, and to keep the protection measures in place.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/fisheries-eu-and-neighbouring-countries-agree-first-ever-joint-multiannual-management-plans-in-the-mediterranean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/noaa-vlvc-7nb2U8-unsplash-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/fisheries-eu-and-neighbouring-countries-agree-first-ever-joint-multiannual-management-plans-in-the-mediterranean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fisheries: EU and neighbouring countries agree first-ever joint multiannual management plans in the Mediterranean<br \/>\n<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn ep-m_product\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-view1200=\"6\" data-view1020=\"6\" data-view750=\"10\" data-view640=\"6\" data-view480=\"8\" data-view320=\"4\">\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn-content\">\n<div class=\"ep-a_text\">\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\"><strong>Report before next extension<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">According to the agreed text, the Commission will prepare a report for the Parliament and the Council by 30 June 2031 on the implementation of these rules before they are due to expire. In case the Commission decides to review the Common Fisheries Policy, it will also conduct an impact assessment in line with the EU\u2019s better regulation principles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\"><strong>Consultations on bottom-contact fishing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">Regarding the use of fishing gear in contact with the seabed, the Commission and Parliament took note of the ongoing discussions in the Channel area, where concerns have been raised about their impact. Both institutions express support for local initiatives and invite member states to submit joint recommendations taking local views into consideration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">This will enable the Commission to follow up with technical measures reflecting scientific assessments \u2013 for which the Commission will provide funding \u2013 and the socioeconomic impact of possible restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">The rules will apply across the EU from 1 January 2023.
