Those designated are subject to an\u00a0<strong>asset freeze<\/strong>\u00a0and EU citizens and companies are\u00a0<strong>forbidden from making funds available<\/strong>\u00a0to them. Natural persons are additionally subject to a\u00a0<strong>travel ban<\/strong>, which prevents them from entering or transiting through EU territories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This decision takes place following the unjustified decision of the Nicaraguan regime to expel the Head of the EU Delegation from the country, and cut diplomatic ties with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, as well as the EU reciprocal response to declare the Head of the Mission of the Republic of Nicaragua to the EU as\u00a0<em>persona non grata<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU reaffirms its continued commitment to the Nicaraguan people and to defending democracy, the rule of law and human rights. The current political crisis in Nicaragua should be resolved through genuine dialogue between the government and opposition. The EU remains open to dialogue with Nicaragua, provided that this dialogue is conducted in a respectful manner.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2022\/10\/10\/nicaragua-head-of-mission-to-the-eu-declared-persona-non-grata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/imagenes.elpais.com\/resizer\/fLzSBHWWE08BQHTjRkgQ_cdQ16M=\/980x0\/filters:focal(390x222:400x232)\/cloudfront-eu-central-1.images.arcpublishing.com\/prisa\/6532KG2VZZG57H4GNRYSHD3UEI.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2022\/10\/10\/nicaragua-head-of-mission-to-the-eu-declared-persona-non-grata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicaragua: head of mission to the EU declared persona non grata<br \/>\n<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Background and next steps<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sanctions regime was first introduced in October 2019 to address Nicaragua\u2019s deteriorating political and social situation, after the Council had repeatedly expressed its concern about such deteriorating situation in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On 4 May 2020, the Council adopted the first restrictive measures against six individuals.
