Read on to find out more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn ep-m_product\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-view1200=\"8\" data-view1020=\"8\" data-view750=\"10\" data-view640=\"6\" data-view480=\"8\" data-view320=\"4\">\n<div class=\"ep_gridcolumn-content\">\n<div class=\"ep-a_text\">\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">Thanks to EU rules on travelling with pets (dogs, cats or ferrets), people are free to move with their furry friend within the EU. Make sure your pet has the following before you leave on holiday:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identification via a registered microchip or a readable tattoo, if applied before 3 July 2011.<\/li>\n<li>A pet passport proving that they have been vaccinated against rabies and are fit to travel, issued by an authorised veterinarian when travelling within from an EU country\/Northern Ireland to another EU country\/Northern Ireland.<\/li>\n<li>An EU animal health certificate, when travelling from a non-EU country.<\/li>\n<li>.Dogs travelling to Finland, Ireland, Malta,\u00a0 Norway or Northern Ireland must be treated against the Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\">In general you can travel with a maximum of five animals. Travelling with more than five animals is only possible with a registration proof concerning a competition, exhibition or sporting event and a proof that they are older than six months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"ep-p_text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Animal protection and welfare in the EU<\/h3>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The European Union has advocated animal welfare for more than 40 years and is widely recognised as a global leader, with some of the world\u2019s best animal welfare standards. EU rules have also positively influenced legislation in non-EU countries. They mainly concern farm animals (on the farm, during transport and at slaughter), but also wildlife, laboratory animals and pets.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"ep_title\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\">\n<div class=\"ep_title\">\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><strong><span class=\"ep_name\">EU rules on animal welfare reflect the so-called five freedoms:<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul class=\"ep_list\">\n<li>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><span class=\"ep_name\">Freedom from hunger and thirst<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><span class=\"ep_name\">Freedom from discomfort<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><span class=\"ep_name\">Freedom from pain, injury and disease<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><span class=\"ep_name\">Freedom to express normal behaviour<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"ep-p_text\"><span class=\"ep_name\">Freedom from fear and distress<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"Viajar con la mascota en Europa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Viajar-con-mascotas-en-la-UE-normas-a-tener-en-cuenta.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/viajar-con-la-mascota-en-europa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Viajar con la mascota en Europa<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Parliament\u2019s call for better protection for transported animals<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">EU rules for<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/en\/ALL\/?uri=CELEX:32005R0001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0the protection and welfare of animals during transport<\/a>\u00a0were approved in 2004. However, in a resolution adopted on 14 February 2019, Parliament called for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/society\/20190206STO25113\/animal-transport-parliament-wants-better-protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">better enforcement, sanctions and reduced journey times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">On 19 June 2020 MEPs set up an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/priorities\/animal-welfare-and-protection\/20200619IPR81604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inquiry committee to look into alleged breaches in the application of EU animal welfare rules<\/a>\u00a0during transport within and outside the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">During a debate on 2 December 2020, MEPs asked Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20201202IPR92918\/meps-to-wojciechowski-eu-farm-policy-must-improve-animal-welfare-in-transport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ensure that EU farm policy improves animals\u2019 welfare during transportation<\/a>. They called on the Commission to support the shortening of supply chains, to encourage the transport of meat instead of live animals and to guarantee imports comply with EU animal welfare standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In April 2021, Parliament&#8217;s inquiry committee looking into the protection of animals during transport said the failure to enforce the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20210419IPR02308\/meps-grilled-commission-on-animal-welfare-during-transport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">current rules on animal welfare during transport is unacceptable<\/a>\u00a0and called for concrete action to correct the problem, including infringement procedures against member states that fail to enforce existing EU rules.<br \/>\nThe committee found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/priorities\/animal-welfare-and-protection\/20211215STO19501\/animal-transport-systematic-failures-revealed-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">systemic failures in the implementation of animal transport<\/a>\u00a0rules across the EU. The committee\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20220114IPR21025\/animals-must-be-better-protected-during-transport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report was adopted<\/a>\u00a0during a plenary session in January 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_heading-2\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Pet protection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">To<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/priorities\/animal-welfare-and-protection\/20200117STO70506\/pet-trafficking-measures-against-the-illegal-puppy-business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0clamp down on the\u00a0<strong>illegal trade in dogs and cats<\/strong><\/a>, Parliament called for an EU-wide action plan, tougher sanctions and mandatory registration in a resolution adopted on 12 February 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">To address the concerns of Europeans who consider pets as part of their families,<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/ALL\/?uri=CELEX:32007R1523\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0cat and dog fur has been banned in the EU since 2008<\/a>. The legislation bans the placing on the market and the import to or export of\u00a0<strong>cat and dog fur<\/strong>\u00a0and of all products containing such fur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ep-wysiwig_paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thanks to harmonised<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/priorities\/animal-welfare-and-protection\/20180703STO07128\/travelling-with-pets-rules-to-keep-in-mind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0EU rules on travelling with pets<\/a>, people are free to move with their furry friends within the European Union.
