To keep up with\u00a0<strong>challenges\u00a0<\/strong>linked to this trend, the GPSR proposal modernises the rules for online marketplaces and updates them for online businesses. The revised rules for general product safety aim to ensure that products of the digital age meet\u00a0<strong>European safety standards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"quote_txt\">\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Jaroslav Zaj\u00ed\u010dek, Czech Deputy Permanent Representative: <\/span>Products sold in the European Union, online or offline, must be safe. In light of technological developments and the increasing digitalisation of our economy, it is important that we revise the current product safety rules.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>The GPSR proposal transforms the\u00a0<strong>general product safety directive<\/strong>\u00a0from 2001 into a regulation, as the directive was no longer suited to address current digital and technological challenges. Transforming the directive into a regulation will ensure a sound legal framework to ensure that products are\u00a0<strong>safe<\/strong>\u00a0and follow European standards.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/dma-council-gives-final-approval-to-new-rules-for-fair-competition-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/javier-miranda-MrWOCGKFVDg-unsplash-768x584.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/dma-council-gives-final-approval-to-new-rules-for-fair-competition-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DMA: Council gives final approval to new rules for fair competition online<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>The Council\u2019s mandate<\/h2>\n<p>The Council position links product safety challenges to new technologies and to online marketplaces. Online marketplaces will have to make sure they know the traders and what kind of products they offer. Under the GPSR, they would also be required to establish a\u00a0<strong>single point of contact\u00a0<\/strong>in charge of product safety.<\/p>\n<p>The GPSR moreover creates a single market\u00a0<strong>surveillance<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>regime<\/strong>\u00a0that applies to all products and ensures that economic operators have a responsible person for all products that are sold online and offline. It also improves rules on the\u00a0<strong>recall<\/strong>\u00a0of products, on\u00a0<strong>food imitating<\/strong>\u00a0products, and on consumer\u00a0<strong>remedies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Next steps<\/h2>\n<p>Today\u2019s mandate has been endorsed by the Council\u2019s Permanent Representatives Committee (Coreper), which will allow the Council presidency to start negotiations with the European Parliament soon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/es\/press\/press-releases\/2022\/07\/20\/general-product-safety-regulation-council-adopts-its-position\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Press release &#8211; European Council<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Member States agreed on a mandate for negotiations with the European Parliament on the proposal for a regulation on general product safety\u00a0(GPSR).
