A European Environment Agency (EEA) briefing investigates how circular economy principles can enhance the benefits of building renovation. It finds that, through 2050, circularity can significantly reduce the use of materials and contribute significant additional reductions in the CO2 emissions embedded in Europe\u2019s buildings.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/el-parlamento-quiere-acelerar-el-uso-de-combustible-sostenible-en-la-aviacion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/david-kovalenko-G85VuTpw6jg-unsplash-768x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/el-parlamento-quiere-acelerar-el-uso-de-combustible-sostenible-en-la-aviacion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fit for 55: Parliament pushes for greener aviation fuels<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Buildings<\/strong>\u00a0consume a lot of\u00a0<strong>material resources<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>energy<\/strong>, and therefore play an important role in Europe\u2019s environment and climate policy.\u00a0<strong>Embedded emissions<\/strong>, which account for emissions released from the extraction of natural resources and their processing to building materials, make up almost\u00a0<strong>a quarter of the life cycle emissions<\/strong>\u00a0of the current EU building stock.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EEA briefing \u2018<span class=\"floated-photo-album-container floated-right relatedItems\"><a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/publications\/building-renovation-where-circular-economy\/building-renovation-where-circular-economy\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Building renovation: where circular economy and climate meet<\/a><\/span>\u2019 analyses the benefits of\u00a0<strong>using circular economy principles<\/strong>\u00a0in Europe\u2019s renovation wave, which means keeping materials and products in use as long as possible and efficiently reusing or recycling all waste.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the EEA briefing, avoiding the use of new building materials holds a great potential for climate change mitigation. The most effective circular renovation actions to save CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions and material use include\u00a0<strong>extending the lifespan<\/strong>\u00a0of existing buildings, for example through repairs and retrofitting instead of demolishing, and using buildings more efficiently, for example by making spaces multifunctional. These actions would\u00a0<strong>reduce demand<\/strong>\u00a0for new construction, which requires much more materials than renovations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moreover, ambitious\u00a0<strong>circular renovation<\/strong>\u00a0strategies, such as using materials that are recycled or designed for disassembly, could cumulatively reduce approximatively 650 million tonnes of materials and save substantial amounts of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0from 2022 to 2050, if the strategies are implemented through renovating the EU building stock.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">EU action on buildings<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The European Commission is currently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/circulareconomy.europa.eu\/platform\/en\/news-and-events\/all-events\/webinar-launch-study-supporting-development-eu-roadmap-reduction-whole-life-carbon-buildings\">developing an EU Roadmap for the reduction of whole life carbon of buildings<\/a>.
