The Council and the European Parliament have reached a provisional political agreement on the proposal for a directive introducing a common charger.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cargador-comun.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-109511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cargador-comun.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1151\" height=\"649\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cargador-comun.jpg 1151w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cargador-comun-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cargador-comun-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/cargador-comun-768x433.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1151px) 100vw, 1151px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The aim of the directive is to introduce a\u00a0<strong>common charging port<\/strong>\u00a0for a whole range of electronic devices. Having a common charger will improve consumer convenience by\u00a0<strong>harmonising charging interfaces<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>fast charging technology<\/strong>, and will\u00a0<strong>reduce electronic waste<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>The new rules<\/h3>\n<p>The directive will make a\u00a0<strong>USB-C<\/strong>\u00a0charging port mandatory for a whole range of electronic devices. This will mean that all devices can be charged using the\u00a0<strong>same charger<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So that every consumer knows exactly what they are buying, the co-legislators have decided to include a\u00a0<strong>pictogram<\/strong>\u00a0specifying whether a new device comes with a charger, and a\u00a0<strong>label<\/strong>\u00a0indicating the charging performance.<\/p>\n<p>The directive also aims to systematically allow consumers to choose whether to purchase a new device with or without a charger. This will\u00a0<strong>reduce the electronic waste<\/strong>\u00a0associated with the production, transportation and disposal of chargers. Four years after the directive enters into force, the Commission will evaluate whether this unbundling of sales should be made\u00a0<strong>mandatory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/ficha\/impact-assessment-study-to-assess-unbundling-of-chargers-final-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Unbundling-of-Chargers-210x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"107\" height=\"151\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/ficha\/impact-assessment-study-to-assess-unbundling-of-chargers-final-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Impact assessment study to assess unbundling of chargers. Final report<br \/>\n<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The new rules will have to be implemented for most devices\u00a0<strong>24 months<\/strong>\u00a0after the entry into force of the directive.<\/p>\n<h3>Categories of devices concerned<\/h3>\n<p>The new rules will apply to a wide range of electronic devices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>mobile phones<\/li>\n<li>tablets and e-readers<\/li>\n<li>digital cameras and video game consoles<\/li>\n<li>headphones, earbuds and portable loudspeakers<\/li>\n<li>wireless mice and keyboards<\/li>\n<li>portable navigation systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, all\u00a0<strong>laptops<\/strong>\u00a0will also be covered by the new rules\u00a0<strong>40 months<\/strong>\u00a0following the date of application of the directive.<\/p>\n<h3>Wireless charging<\/h3>\n<p>More and more consumers are using wireless charging, which is not yet harmonised across devices. As of 2024, all new handheld mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, handheld videogame consoles, headphones, headsets, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, and earbuds will have to be equipped with a USB-C charging port.
