{"id":109367,"date":"2022-06-06T13:39:21","date_gmt":"2022-06-06T11:39:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/?p=109367"},"modified":"2022-06-06T13:39:49","modified_gmt":"2022-06-06T11:39:49","slug":"main-results-of-the-foreign-affairs-council-trade-3-june-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/main-results-of-the-foreign-affairs-council-trade-3-june-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Main results of the Foreign Affairs Council (Trade) &#8211; 3 June 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Valdis-DOMBROVSKIS-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-109370 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Valdis-DOMBROVSKIS-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Main results of the Foreign Affairs Council (Trade) - 3 June 2022\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Valdis-DOMBROVSKIS-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Valdis-DOMBROVSKIS-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Valdis-DOMBROVSKIS-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Valdis-DOMBROVSKIS-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Valdis-DOMBROVSKIS-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Valdis-DOMBROVSKIS-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>WTO reform and preparations for the 12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0WTO ministerial conference<\/h3>\n<p>Ministers discussed\u00a0<strong>preparations<\/strong>\u00a0for the 12th World Trade Organization ministerial conference (<strong>CM12<\/strong>), which will take place in Geneva from 12\u00a0to 15\u00a0June\u00a02022 against the backdrop of\u00a0<strong>Russia\u2019s aggression<\/strong>\u00a0against Ukraine and the COVID-19\u00a0<strong>pandemic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers expressed broad support for the Commission\u2019s suggested line of action for the 12th ministerial conference, in particular regarding the possible outcomes, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a ministerial declaration on the WTO\u2019s response to\u00a0<strong>global trade challenges<\/strong>\u00a0with reference to the reform of the organisation, dispute settlement, development and the environment<\/li>\n<li>a declaration on the WTO\u2019s response to the\u00a0<strong>pandemic<\/strong>\u00a0and a decision on the waiver of trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights (<strong>TRIPS<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>decisions in support of\u00a0<strong>food security<\/strong>, together with work programmes aimed at moving forward on the 13<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0ministerial conference on agriculture reform<\/li>\n<li>the conclusion of the\u00a0<strong>fisheries subsidies<\/strong>\u00a0negotiations<\/li>\n<li>the extension of the\u00a0<strong>moratorium<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong>e-commerce<\/strong>\u00a0until CM13<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ministers also expressed their solidarity with Ukraine and their concern over the repercussions of the Russia&#8217;s war of aggression, supported by Belarus, against Ukraine on world trade and on the future results of CM12.<\/p>\n<p>The Foreign Affairs Council (Trade) will meet again\u00a0<strong>in Geneva on 12\u00a0June<\/strong>\u00a0in the margins of the WTO ministerial conference, as well as at the end of it.<\/p>\n<h3>EU-US trade relations<\/h3>\n<p>The Council held an exchange of views on the current state of EU-US trade relations and recent developments, including the results of the 12th meeting of the\u00a0<strong>EU\u2013US Trade and Technology Council<\/strong>\u00a0(TTC) held on 16 May at Paris-Saclay, and the outlook for those relations.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers highlighted the positive dynamic in relations with the US. Regarding recent developments, ministers stressed that the consequences of Russia\u2019s war of aggression against Ukraine on the geopolitical situation made relations with the US all the\u00a0<strong>more important<\/strong>. In that context, ministers expressed their commitment to\u00a0<strong>advancing<\/strong>\u00a0a positive,\u00a0<strong>forward-looking<\/strong>\u00a0transatlantic agenda.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-us-relations-strengthening-trade-and-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/EEUU-UE.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/eu-us-relations-strengthening-trade-and-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU-US Relations : Strengthening Trade and Technology<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Council praised the work of the TTC as an important factor in restoring a culture of\u00a0<strong>cooperation<\/strong>, while respecting the\u00a0<strong>regulatory autonomy<\/strong>\u00a0of the EU and the US.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers expressed their commitment to continuing their intensive work with a view to achieving further concrete results before the next TTC meeting, which will take place before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>To maintain the current positive momentum in bilateral trade relations, ministers stressed the importance to continue working to definitively settle existing disputes (e.g. over the\u00a0<strong>Airbus\/Boeing<\/strong>\u00a0subsidies and over\u00a0<strong>\u2018Section 232\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0tariffs on European steel and aluminium) and to prevent new barriers to bilateral trade from arising.<\/p>\n<p>In order to maintain the current positive momentum in bilateral trade relations, ministers stressed the importance of continuing to work on the final settlement of existing disputes (e.g. Airbus\/Boeing subsidies and European steel and aluminium tariffs under \u201cSection 232\u201d) and of preventing the emergence of new barriers to bilateral trade.<\/p>\n<h3>EU-China trade relations<\/h3>\n<p>Ministers took stock of the recent developments and main orientations in trade relations with China, particularly with an eye to an EU-China high-level economic and trade dialogue.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/ficha\/china-and-the-battle-of-coalitions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/China-and-the-battle-of-coalitions.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"134\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/ficha\/china-and-the-battle-of-coalitions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China and the battle of coalitions<br \/>\n<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ministers reaffirmed the conclusions of the EU-China summit on 1\u00a0April 2022, in which the EU stressed the need to address long-standing concerns about\u00a0<strong>market access<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>investment conditions<\/strong>\u00a0in China, in order to ensure balanced and reciprocal trade and economic relations. On that occasion, EU and Chinese leaders also mandated the high-level economic and trade dialogue to find tangible ways to make progress on these issues\u00a0<strong>before the summer<\/strong>.
