The regulation sets out the\u00a0<strong>final total allowable catches (TACs) and quotas<\/strong>\u00a0for member states in the Atlantic and North Sea, taking into account fish stocks subject to bilateral consultations.<\/p>\n<p>Changes to the previous year\u2019s TACs were agreed with the UK in line with scientific advice, and include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a 53% decrease for\u00a0<strong>Norway pout<\/strong>\u00a0in the North Sea<\/li>\n<li>a 62% decrease for\u00a0<strong>sprat<\/strong>\u00a0in the English Channel from 1 January \u2013 30 June<\/li>\n<li>a 70% increase for\u00a0<strong>plaice<\/strong>\u00a0in the waters around southern Ireland (divisions 7h, 7j and 7k)<\/li>\n<li>a 92% increase for\u00a0<strong>whiting<\/strong>\u00a0in the waters west of Scotland (division 6a)<\/li>\n<li>a 50% increase in the by-catch for\u00a0<strong>northern prawn<\/strong>\u00a0in the North Sea, to avoid a choke situation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, the regulation sets the fishing opportunities for\u00a0<strong>anchovy in the Bay of Biscay<\/strong>. The final TAC of 33\u00a0000 tonnes is divided between Spain (29\u00a0700 tonnes) and France (3\u00a0300 tonnes). This update also includes the fishing opportunities for\u00a0<strong>sandeel in the North Sea<\/strong>\u00a0(divisions 2a, 3 and 4), which were established following consultations with the United Kingdom. Based on ICES advice, the quota allocated to the EU for 2022 will be 86\u00a0303 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the temporary EU quota for\u00a0<strong>cod<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>in Spitzbergen (Svalbard)<\/strong>\u00a0of 4 500 tonnes has been extended until the end of April. This is to ensure that fishing of this stock can continue, pending a common understanding with Norway for the whole of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, this amendment to the regulation on fishing opportunities takes account of the results of consultations that took place within certain Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs), such as the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), and the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC).<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/ficha\/fisheries-dependent-information-fdi-stecf-21-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Fisheries-dependent-information-%E2%80%93-FDI-STECF-21-12-620x380.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/ficha\/fisheries-dependent-information-fdi-stecf-21-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fisheries dependent information \u2013 FDI (STECF-21-12)<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>Establishing the final TACs and quotas for 2022<\/h3>\n<p>This regulation marks the final step in the annual process of setting fishing opportunities in EU and non-EU waters. It follows on from the\u00a0<strong>political agreement on TACs and quotas<\/strong>\u00a0reached at the Agriculture and Fisheries Council on 14 December 2021, which was implemented as Regulation (EU) 2022\/109. As consultations with the UK were not concluded until 21 December, the initial agreement set out\u00a0<strong>provisional TACs and quotas<\/strong>\u00a0for relevant stocks under shared management. The present regulation amends Regulation (EU) 2022\/109 to take account of the agreement reached with the UK.<\/p>\n<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<p>Following the UK\u2019s withdrawal from the EU, fish stocks jointly managed by the EU and the UK are considered\u00a0<strong>shared resources<\/strong>\u00a0under international law. The\u00a0<strong>Trade and Cooperation Agreement<\/strong>\u00a0(TCA) between the two parties sets out the terms under which the EU and the UK determine their respective fishing rights in the Atlantic and North Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Under the TCA, both parties agree to hold\u00a0<strong>annual talks<\/strong>\u00a0with a view to determining TACs and quotas for the following year.
