That is a second month of what was supposed to be a quick \u201cspecial military operation\u201d \u201caimed only at military targets\u201d. The reality couldn\u2019t be more grossly different. Instead \u2013 and due to an undeniable lack of the expected progress \u2013 Russia is resorting to ever more grim methods of warfare. Or war crimes, if we drop all euphemisms. At the same time, as one would expect, the Kremlin\u2019s disinformation machinery incessantly repeats the delusion that the invasion is \u201cdeveloping successfully\u201d and \u201cgoing to plan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Putin-Zelensky-wresting.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-101517 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Putin-Zelensky-wresting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Putin-Zelensky-wresting.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Putin-Zelensky-wresting-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Putin-Zelensky-wresting-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Putin-Zelensky-wresting-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Putin-Zelensky-wresting-1280x720.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Putin-Zelensky-wresting-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u201cSpecial military operation\u201d in the twisted mirror of lies and deceit<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Though this is nothing new, Russian state-controlled disinformation outlets and diplomatic accounts on social media are stepping up\u00a0portraying\u00a0Ukraine as a Nazi state in order to justify the atrocities they are committing all across Ukraine. Additionally, the Kremlin\u2019s\u00a0Nazi obsession\u00a0has internal purposes as well. Namely, to distract attention from the weaknesses of Russia\u2019s regime and unite Russian society against an imaginary external enemy to then battle against it.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a notable link between the \u201cneo-Nazi\u201d narrative and Russian attempts to level the blame for the humanitarian suffering against Ukraine. Pro-Kremlin outlets blamed \u201cneo-Nazis\u201d for the\u00a0horrid attack\u00a0against a theatre in Mariupol sheltering hundreds of civilians that was actually carried out by the Russian military. As if this weren\u2019t enough, Russia\u2019s disinformation outlets accuse \u201cneo-Nazis\u201d of killing between 80 and 235 civilians per day trying to leave Mariupol.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/putin-the-new-tamer-of-neo-nazism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Putin-Nazi-row-of-soldiers--768x432.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/putin-the-new-tamer-of-neo-nazism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Putin: The new tamer of neo-Nazism?<br \/>\n<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Over the weekend, Russian\u00a0state-affiliated media\u00a0and proxies promoted the message that Russia is massively assisting evacuated people and that Ukrainian refugees would prefer to go to Russia. As is often the case with Russian disinformation, there is a kernel of truth in this. According to UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, about 250,000 people have indeed relocated from Ukraine to Russia. In addition to\u00a0reports\u00a0that some of these people didn\u2019t actually have a choice, Russian officials seem to forget or overlook the\u00a0reality\u00a0that Poland, Romania, Moldova, Hungary and Slovakia have welcomed 14 times as many refugees as Russia and Belarus combined.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>On the other side of the Kremlin-imposed curtain<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Back home, in a desperate attempt to control the domestic information sphere and get people to rally around the flag, the Kremlin keeps at it on both tracks \u2013 cracking down on the freedom of expression and keeping its firehose of falsehoods splashing.<\/p>\n<p>Given the closed state of Russia\u2019s information environment, it\u2019s hard to assess from the outside the effectiveness of the Kremlin\u2019s measures. To an extent, its work seems to be paying off. Though exact numbers vary and are to be taken with a considerable dose of scepticism,\u00a0results from various polling companies seem to suggest that there is indeed wide support for the invasion of Ukraine among Russian citizens.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.9988%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: double; border-color: #001f7d;\" cellpadding=\"0,5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/the-kremlins-weapons-of-deception-7-things-you-need-to-know-about-russia-today-and-sputnik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/uploads\/2022\/03\/RT-Sputnik.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/en\/the-kremlins-weapons-of-deception-7-things-you-need-to-know-about-russia-today-and-sputnik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Kremlin\u2019s Weapons of Deception: 7 Things You Need to Know about Russia Today and Sputnik<br \/>\n<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>As a supposed embodiment of that support, a pro-war rally was held at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow last week with Vladimir Putin himself making a rare public appearance. But the appearance of cheering crowds might have been just that \u2013 an appearance. The BBC\u2019s Russian Service, among others,\u00a0reported\u00a0that several attendees were brought to the event either with bribes or threats. The broadcast of the event has been scrutinised as well, as Putin\u2019s speech was interrupted unexpectedly. Allegedly, this happened because the\u00a0crowd started whistling\u00a0in discontent, as Putin talked about the soldiers\u2019 readiness to sacrifice themselves.<\/p>\n<p>That said, we are seeing ample signs that tell us otherwise. For example, several high-profile employees of Russian outlets \u2013 e.g., Zhanna Agalakova and Ivan Urgant of Channel One, Liliya Gildeeva of NTV, Maria Baronova of RT \u2013\u00a0have left\u00a0their jobs, not wanting to take part in the Kremlin\u2019s disinformation machine any more. The exodus has been so widespread that one of Russia\u2019s most seasoned propagandists,\u00a0<strong>Sergey Brilev<\/strong>, deputy head of the state broadcaster Rossiya, had to publicly\u00a0announce\u00a0that he would not quit his job after being absent from the public for some time. Altogether, more than 150 journalists\u00a0have reportedly left\u00a0Russia since February 2022.<\/p>\n<p>There is also the constant game of cat and mouse between the\u00a0Kremlin\u2019s censors and Russian citizens. Although the operators of the thought control machine have really hit the pedal hard this time, people keep coming up with creative ways to sneak in and out of the censorship bubble.
