The meetings, which took place in Washington D.C., were led by \u00a0EU Special Representative for Human Rights, Eamon Gilmore and acting Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, Lisa Peterson, and reaffirmed their strong mutual commitment to the transatlantic partnership.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/EEUU-UE.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13310 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/EEUU-UE.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/EEUU-UE.png 766w, https:\/\/www.cde.ual.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/EEUU-UE-300x204.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">During substantive discussions, both the EU and US addressed challenges to\u00a0democracy and\u00a0human rights around the world, emphasising in particular the need to hold the Russian Federation accountable for its unjustified and unprovoked war against Ukraine and its people. They agreed on the importance of cooperation\u00a0in effectively promoting respect for human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">The discussions covered a range of human rights issues in Europe and the United States, as well as Asia, Africa, and Latin America.\u00a0Discussions also focused on cooperation in multilateral fora and on issues pertaining to technology and human rights, business and human rights, disability rights, and the empowerment of women and girls, as well as the protection of underrepresented communities \u2013 including historically racially and ethnically marginalised communities, and LGBTQI+ persons.
